If you’ve spent time researching Labrador Retrievers, you’ve probably come across the terms “English Labrador” and “American Labrador.” While these labels are commonly used, they often create confusion.

The truth is that English and American Labs are not different breeds—both are purebred Labrador Retrievers. The terms simply describe breeding lines that have been developed with different priorities over many generations.

At Mountain View Champions, we primarily raise Labradors from English bloodlines, but our breeding philosophy focuses on a very specific aspect of what people picture when they hear the term.

English vs. American Bloodlines

Traditionally, English Labradors have been bred for conformation (dog shows) and companionship, while American Labradors have been bred primarily for hunting, field work, and athletic performance. Because of these different goals, the two lines have noticeable physical and behavioral traits.

English Labradors are generally known for:

  • Broad, blocky heads
  • Thick bone structure and muscular bodies
  • Calm, affectionate personalities
  • Excellent family temperaments

American Labradors are typically:

  • Taller, leaner, and more athletic in appearance
  • Higher-energy and extremely driven to work
  • Well-suited for intense hunting and field sports

Of course, every dog is an individual, and even within these categories, there are differences between bloodlines.

Our Breeding Philosophy: Midsized English Labs

When many people hear the phrase “English Labrador,” they picture a heavy dog weighing 80 to 100+ pounds with an extremely stocky build. While those dogs certainly exist and many breeders beautifully maintain that style, that isn’t the exact build we strive to produce.

Instead, we intentionally breed what we call Midsized English Labs.

To us, that means preserving the qualities that have made English Labradors so beloved while maintaining an athletic, functional build that fits effortlessly into everyday family life. Our goal is to produce Labradors that feature:

  • The classic look: Beautiful, blocky heads and strong, broad chests to produce a balanced body without exaggerated features.
  • The ideal temperament: The calm, loving, and dependable disposition English Labs are famous for.
  • Functional sizing: A moderate size that is easy to live with, yet has enough athletic ability for all-day family adventures.

In other words, we want our puppies to be just as happy hiking a mountain trail as they are curling up at your feet after dinner.

Built for Real Life (With an “Off Switch”)

Our Labradors are bred to be true family companions. We want dogs that can easily join you for camping trips, backyard fetch, car rides, and swims.

Just as importantly, we value an “off switch.” This means a Labrador that, as an adult, loves being active outdoors, but once they’ve burned off some energy, knows how to settle down quietly when the day is over.

While we have had puppies compete in AKC events and go on to serve successfully in hunting or search-and-rescue roles, family temperament always comes first. We carefully select breeding dogs that are gentle with children, eager to please, and highly intelligent. You can view our Labs here. This makes them wonderful family pets while giving them the core potential to excel as therapy, service, or emotional support animals.

Why a Moderate Size Matters

We believe a moderate-sized Labrador offers the best balance for the families we predominantly serve and, most importantly, is the Lab that best matches our family’s lifestyle and goals.

A midsized English Lab is large enough to have that classic Labrador substance and strength, but not so large that everyday activities become difficult. Whether you’re lifting your dog into the SUV, sharing a tent on a weekend getaway, or simply relaxing on the couch, a moderate build is ideal without sacrificing the classic breed look.

Because variety occurs, even within our own labs, there is some variation in size and structure. If you have a specific look or size preference, we are always happy to talk through our dogs’ characteristics, send pictures, or invite you out to meet the parents to ensure your future puppy is a perfect match.

Finding the Right Fit For You

We are incredibly thankful for the wide variety available within this amazing breed! It is a joy to watch Labs from top hunting lines work a field, just as it’s wonderful to interact with massive, gorgeous show Labs.

If you are looking for those specific characteristics, we are happy to chat and point you toward options that may be an ideal match. Ultimately, our goal is to ensure our puppies go to homes where they are the absolute best fit—and if a puppy from our line isn’t the perfect match for your lifestyle, we want to help you find an option that is.

If you are looking for a sturdy, stable companion who is active without being hyper, gentle with kids, and ready to be a beloved member of the family, a Midsized English Labrador may be exactly what you’re searching for.
